ABORIGINAL STUDENT SUPPORT OFFICER

Position Description

TrEd College is a private Registered Training Organisation with a campus in Macquarie park, NSW. The Objects of the college are the provision of vocational education and training with an excellent standard of teaching, scholarship and research, training for the professions.

TrEd college seeks expressions of interest from applicants who possess a tertiary qualification and an interest in working with Aboriginal students enrolled in tertiary programs. It is essential that applicants have knowledge of and credibility within Aboriginal community settings and, ideally, have experience in providing support for Aboriginal students in higher education.

It is important that the applicant can build relationships with Aboriginal students and be able to engage staff in matters related to Aboriginal student support. Excellent administrative skills are required, as is the ability to work within relevant regulatory and policy frameworks and an ability to contribute to Aboriginal cultural awareness training will be highly advantageous. Key Responsibilities:

1. Provide accurate and timely advice to a range of inquiries from Aboriginal students and local aboriginal communities on courses and support services offered.
2. Assist in enhancing Aboriginal student experiences by supporting the planning and implementation of activities ranging from mentoring, cultural activities and graduations, etc in order to support effective student engagements.
3. Develop individual career pathway plans to improve education and employment outcomes for Aboriginal students to support course involvement and completion.
4. Monitor Aboriginal learners on a needs basis and refer to appropriate internal and external support services addressing non-educational and educational barriers for activities such as readiness assessments and screening for learnability skills.
5. Support Aboriginal learners’ transition to employment or further education by connecting them with employers and support services providing employment networking, work placement, training in employability, and job-seeking skills.

6. Collaborate with the marketing team to develop culturally appropriate materials in order to promote and enhance the learning experience for aboriginal students.

7. Provide a broad range of administration and support services including case management, preparing routine correspondence, reporting, and collation of data, information, and records.

8. Liaise with various Government, Non-Government, private, industry, and community organisations in order to explore student support options.
9. Work with the Operations Manager to develop and review meaningful performance management and development plans.

Essential Requirements:

1. Relevant Skills, knowledge, and experience in administration support services
2. Aboriginality (Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act of 1977). Candidates should present proof of Aboriginality as part of their application.
3. Class C drivers’ license.
4. Ability to address and meet focus capabilities as stated in the Position Description.
