Te Kura Ākau Taitoka/The University of Otago College of Education is dedicated to the enhancement of educational practice through high quality teaching, scholarship, research, professional leadership and community service, to benefit children, other learners, educators and the wider community (in local, national and international settings).

Te mahi/The role
We seek to appoint a permanent, full-time, Professional Practice Fellow in Secondary Education. Our hope is to attract candidates who can teach from an integrated curriculum perspective.
The successful candidate would ideally bring special expertise in Science and/or Health and Physical Education curriculum areas and in te reo and tikaka Māori in the secondary education sector. Flexibility in teaching in a variety of areas of the curriculum is highly desirable.
- Supporting teaching in the secondary education curriculum of Master of Teaching and Learning degrees. This includes preparation, assessment, teaching and paper administration duties under the supervision of the course coordinators and the Programme Coordinator (Secondary).
- Supervising students on professional experience placements.
- Contributing to the academic and professional life of the secondary teaching team, and the College more broadly, by applying and sharing expert knowledge in the professional discipline of education.
- Recognising kā hapū o Ōtākou rūnaka – values, tikaka (processes), dialect, kawa (rules of cultural practice), and traditions of our manawhenua and Kāi Tahu iwi.
- Valuing and growing te reo and tikaka Māori in course content.
- Consulting and working with the College of Education Associate Dean (Māori), Pasifika Coordinator, Secondary Programmes Coordinator, and other staff to ensure that papers and programmes develop cultural confidence and competence in graduates.
You will be supported through a collegial academic environment, an active and dynamic research culture, and through efficient professional services across the University.
The opportunity exists within this position to pursue doctoral study at the College of Education.
Kā pūkeka me kā wheako/Skills and experience
- New Zealand teacher registration and current full practising certificate.
- Relevant professional qualification in teaching.
- Hold at least a Master’s degree.
- Ability to teach the pedagogical content knowledge related to Science and/or Health and Physical Education learning areas of the New Zealand curriculum.
- Relevant professional experience in secondary school curriculum and/or pertinent to the education of secondary school students.
- Experience in Māori and/or Pacific education, proficiency in te reo Māori and/or Pacific languages, and established connections with Māori and/or Pacific communities are desirable for this role.
- Evidence of an ability to work well with students and staff from differing academic and cultural backgrounds.
- A demonstrated commitment to te reo, tikaka and the articles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and to equal opportunity.
