He angitūtanga: About the Role
As Engagement Coordinator you will play a crucial role and be responsible for engagements to support better understanding of, and improvements to, the whitebait fishery.
You will work closely with the national Whitebait team, and local DOC teams to develop and deliver communications and engagement activities seeking to both gather data on and improve the management of the whitebait fishery.
To support delivery of this important mahi you will:
- Join the Whitebait Fishery Manager and Whitebait Fishery Project Manager in a National team, and undertake a variety of different types of work, matched to the work programme needs and your own skills
- Lead the development of stakeholder profiles and implementation of the stakeholder and tangata whenua engagement process using your excellent communication skills
- Identify, grow, and nurture relationships with key individuals and groups from relevant sectors and organisations, mostly online but also in person
- Remotely organise and promote stakeholder events by supporting our Rangers at place in their whitebait engagement activities (such as public meetings and workshops)
- Write up the outcomes of this engagement, to a level suitable for inclusion in a report the Minister of Conservation and the public (support and training offered)
- Receive enquiries from stakeholders, whitebaiters, whanau, iwi and hapu and either respond to them yourself or refer them to your colleagues as appropriate
He kōrero mōu: What we are looking for
You will be a passionate about communication and comfortable working in a virtual team online. You are skilled at generating written communications and interested in science communication. You are a pragmatic person who is experienced in working to a deadline, delivering, and working effectively with others.
We want to hear from you if you have:
- Experience in external and/or internal communications
- Experience in working with a range of people, using comms to engage stakeholders and tangata whenua and develop two-way communication
- Enjoy working in dynamic and challenging projects
To deliver in the role you will have:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong planning, prioritization, and relationship skills.
- A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience
- A high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
It would also be an advantage if you had:
- Something in common with whitebaiters, for example fishing, hunting, or gathering in your own time, or enjoying spending time in nature.
- Established relationships or have worked closely in partnership with whānau, hapū and iwi
- Group facilitation skills and experience of engaging with groups and individuals holding/expressing strong and diverse opinions
- Experience in gathering sociological data from participants
- Worked on complex projects involving multi-disciplinary teams, partners, and stakeholder groups

The salary range for this position is $61,916- $79,115 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
