The School of Physiotherapy strives to provide excellence in physiotherapy teaching, research, and clinical practice. Our focus is primarily on the assessment, treatment, and prevention of physical dysfunction and promoting health for people of all ages.
The role/Te mahi
This Assistant Research Fellow role is to organise and assist Dr Paulo Henrique Silva Pelicioni and his team in tasks related to the administration and conduct of a research project aiming to understand the progression of Parkinson’s disease among Māori and Pacific peoples living with Parkinson’s disease.
The project, funded by the Michael J Fox Foundation, involves assessing and interviewing people living with Parkinson’s disease and their whānau.
As an Assistant Research Fellow, you will have responsibility for operational and administrative components of the research project and contribute to the preparation and dissemination of outputs.
- Community engagement and promotion of the research study.
- Liaising and engaging with key stakeholders, including Māori and Pacific organisations.
- Working with and assisting the research and programme staff.
- Assisting with recruitment and some administrative task oversight, as needed.
- Ensuring research protocols are adhered to and in place.
- Assisting with data analysis and preparation of manuscript and report publications.
Skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
- You must have a full New Zealand driver’s license.
- You must be compliant with current Ministry of Health mandated requirements as they apply to the University of Otago School of Physiotherapy.
- A health professional background, preferably a Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist or Nurse, or graduates of Exercise and Sport Science degrees (or equivalent qualifications).
- Clinical experience especially in the area of ageing.
- A commitment to the principles of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi and equal opportunity.
- Evidence of an ability to work well with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Experience with community engagement and health promotion would be of significant advantage, particularly with Māori and Pacific communities.
- Excellent administration skills.
- Excellent verbal communication skills, both one-on-one as well as in large groups.
- Excellent written skills.
- Post-graduate qualification is preferable, or substantial research experience in lieu of postgraduate qualification.
Knowledge and experience of Parkinson’s disease is highly desirable. However, if the candidate does not have such knowledge and experience, they must have to have the ability and willingness to learn about Parkinson’s disease. This would be advantageous to understand the project and communicate with patients and health professionals if required. Training will be given where necessary.

We are seeking for two candidates. These are part-time, fixed-term positions until 30 December 2024 (0.3 FTE to 30 December 2022, reducing to 0.2 FTE 1 January 2023 to 30 December 2024).
