About Us/Mō mātou

At the Department of Population Health we work to understand the practice of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting the health of entire populations and population sub-groups. This is a key goal in Aotearoa New Zealand to reduce health inequalities. The Department also teaches undergraduate medical students in their clinical years (years 4-6) and also offers a variety of postgraduate programmes in public health. Research students are supervised for Masters and PhD degrees.
The role/Te mahi
As an Assistant Research Fellow you will be primarily responsible for applying knowledge and understanding of Te Ao Māori (Te Reo Māori me ōna Tikanga) and health to contribute to te Rōpu Rangahau ō te Kāhui Matepukupuku, the Cancer Society Research Collaboration specifically:
1. Project 3.4 Co-design intervention – Nutrition support for Māori cancer patients.
2. Project 3.8 Public awareness on nutrition, alcohol, cancer link & promoting cancer and nutrition/alcohol link.
3. As well as the related UORG funded project: Nāu te rourou, nāku te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi.
- Initiating project organisation and management as part of a research team, including supporting data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
- Contributing to research outputs.
- Assisting with research dissemination Aim.
Skills and Experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
- Relevant qualification or experience.
- Interest in qualitative data analysis and interpretation.
- Administrative experience, ideally in project management.
- A demonstrated commitment to improving Māori health and reducing inequalities.
- Understanding of and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its principles.
- Knowledge of the health system.
- An ability to work as a member of team is essential.

This is a part-time (0.5FTE), fixed term role for 12 months.
