About the Team
The SDHB Children’s Health team includes Paediatricians, clinical psychologists (who travel from Dunedin) as well as the speech language therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and social workers who make up the Child Development Service. You will also work with the Invercargill Child Adolescent Family Mental Health Service (CAFMHS).
We also work in partnership with many other community agencies such as Ministry of Education, schools, pre-schools, and community social services.
Working closely with family/ whānau in partnership to build an effective team and to provide positive outcomes for the child is integral part of the role. You will be expected to give effect to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi – Partnership, Participation and Protection through your interaction with others on a day-to-day basis.

About the Role – what’s in it for me?
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the SDHB Children’s Health team to coordinate referrals for children and young people (0-19 years) who have a possible Autism diagnosis. Where professional assessment is required, the Autism Developmental Coordinator will refer and coordinate a pathway through multidisciplinary, multi-agency and assessment processes. Once a diagnosis has been reached, where Autism has been identified, the Co-ordinator will collaborate with the family to meet the identified developmental needs of the individual, linking and integrating with services as required.
This is an exciting role for a registered and qualified health professional or for a person with evidenced experience and knowledge of Autism in children and young people. Working in conjunction with an identical role based in Dunedin, and with the full support of Management, there is the opportunity to further develop local systems and processes.
About You
It is essential that you are self-motivated with a high level of enthusiasm and commitment to your professional development and personal growth. You will have excellent organisational skills and the ability to be flexible to act independently and also as part of a team.
Knowledge of referral pathways; an ability to advocate and educate; a systematic, well organised approach and above all the ability to communicate widely and effectively are essential attributes for this position.
You will also :
Have the ability to build supportive responsive relationships with children, young people and their families.
Have the ability to prioritise own workload and manage own time effectively
Be respectful and adaptable in approach to suit individual differences in cultural and family values.
Be able to problem solve and demonstrate initiative
