Kōrero mō te tūranga – About the role
We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic community nurse, wishing to join this experienced and professional team. We are looking for a nurse to work 0.7 FTE with the ability to work additional FTE if the opportunity arises.
The Wellington Blood and Cancer Centre in New Zealand’s capital city is increasingly recognised as a centre of excellence in the provision of specialist care to people with cancer and haematological disorders. The primary focus for this position is the community with an expectation to cover all areas of the CCDHB bases (Wellington, Kapiti, Porirua / Kenepuru). Experience with Oncology and Haematology nursing is essential. You will be required to work autonomously within a team framework. Skills sought are previous experience with, central lines, cytotoxic drugs and monoclonal antibodies. The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills to liaise with the MDT, be capable of providing education to a patient receiving chemotherapy, understand the side effects associated with chemotherapy, have excellent clinical assessment skills and work with the patient and their families to manage symptoms in the home.
The successful candidate will receive a thorough, comprehensive orientation to the service with on-going educational opportunities and support through the PDRP and the recently developed Knowledge and Skills Framework for Cancer Nursing. Furthermore, the successful nurse/s will be enrolled in the regional eviQ ADAC anti-neoplastic learning modules.
All RN staff employed are required to complete the regional certification for chemotherapy administration using the eviQ ADAC antineoplastic modules. All new staff will be encouraged to progress on the PDRP within the first 12 months. We have a great team culture and the Wellington Blood and Cancer Centre has an on-going quality improvement program called the Ambulatory Model of Care that has 4 work streams:
- Better scheduling of patients therefore better patient experience
- Supportive care nearer to DHB of domicile
- Development of outreach services
- Development of Acute Oncology Services
- Chemotherapy education of patients and their whanau
- Assessment of patients within the community setting; assessment of chemotherapy/immunotherapy side effects, assessment of acute symptoms
- Liaise with various members of patients- medical teams and MDT to access required care based on needs/symptoms
- Chemotherapy delivery/handling of chemotherapy, for example removal of chemotherapy infuser
- Management of central lines including blood taking, routine cares and trouble shooting
Moū – About you
- 3 years- experience in oncology and/or haematology
- NZ nursing registration
- Experience of working in the community is not essential but preferred.
- Knowledge of chemotherapy/immunotherapy, risks and side effects
- Experience in the management of central lines
- A full NZ drivers licence is essential for this role
