Mō te tūnga | About the role
Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL) is a busy diagnostic facility providing services to in-patients and outpatients at Canterbury DHB Hospitals within Christchurch. You-ll be working for the largest medical laboratory in the South Island which is also a major secondary/tertiary referral centre with a varied and challenging caseload. We have a modern and well-equipped lab including a good range of specialist equipment.
In this role, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks including communicating with service users, blood collection in the Blood Test Centre and hospital wards, processing specimens, data entry and responding to queries. You will be required to service various wards in the Christchurch Campus and therefore must be able to effectively move from one ward to the next for long periods of time.
You-ll be passionate about providing a high-quality service and be able to build trusted relationships with patients and their whānau.
This role is part of our Winter Flex positions, in order to support the team and community throughout winter. This role is a fixed-term contract till September 2022, requiring you to work 20 hours per week, 7 am to 11 am Monday to Friday.
In this role, you will be responsible for:
- Providing a high-quality service to clients
- Collecting blood samples from inpatients and outpatients within the service
- Performing additional testing such as Mantoux and Urine Drug Screening
- Registering samples into the Delphic LIS
- Carrying out processes required for the pre-analytical processing of samples
- Interpretation and input of request forms
- Checking of data for accuracy and information
- Liaising with staff, patients and referrers effectively
- Maintaining knowledge and on-going education in Phlebotomy

Your skills will include:
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Bring proactive and taking initiative
- The ability to pick up and use technology and software systems
- Registration with the Medical Sciences Council in phlebotomy is essential
