Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity

The key focus of the Mental Health and Addiction Commissioning group in Health New Zealand is on delivering actions set out the interim New Zealand Health Plan and Kia Manawanui: Long-term pathway to mental wellbeing. Kia Manawanui takes forward the Government’s response to He Ara Oranga: Report of the Government Inquiry into Mental Health and Addiction and sets the direction for the long-term transformation of New Zealand’s approach to mental wellbeing.

The role of Group Manager Addiction is a leadership role in the Mental Health and Addiction Commissioning group that will be responsible for providing high quality strategic leadership, planning and direction ensuring delivery of key work programmes and priorities.

This will include:

  • Working in partnership with the Māori Health Authority to achieve the collective goals for mental health and addiction
  • Lead the strategic direction and planning of the team and support the Director Mental Health and Addictions to achieve the vision of the Commissioning Directorate
  • Lead programmes of work within the Directorate and Health NZ to deliver on the Government’s and Health NZ’s priorities and objectives
  • Work across Health NZ to lead and ensure strong and appropriate linkages with and between projects, programme development, implementation, planning, funding, and monitoring
  • Build collaborative and positive relationships across the Directorate, Health NZ, Māori Health Authority, the wider health sector, government, and other external stakeholders

Mōu | About you

You will be a senior leader with significant experience in commissioning mental health and addiction services. A strong stakeholder manager, you will bring demonstrated experience in building productive relationships both internally and externally. As this role requires you to wear many different hats, you will be at ease within a strategic setting, providing advice to the Leadership Team and you will have the ability to react decisively and quickly when required. In addition to this you will bring:

  • A proven ability to lead teams and to deliver across a large complex programme of work
  • A strong disposition towards leading from the front and mentoring and coaching to build capability
  • Demonstrated experience navigating across complex organisations and a sound knowledge of the machinery of government
  • Demonstrated experience in analysing a complex range of information, and critical thinking to help leadership with informed decision making
  • Highly developed stakeholder management skills with confidence and credibility to engage effectively with, and influence stakeholders across the business and drive change
  • Excellent attention to detail and outstanding writing skills, you’ll have a natural ability to quickly present information in a concise, accurate and easy to understand form
  • Experience in taking leadership action in major/critical situations
