Mō tēnei tūranga mahi – About the role

The Manager Student Pastoral Support is a member of the Ara Ākonga Success Leadership Team Using co-design approaches, you will lead the Student Pastoral Support team to offer “best in class” pastoral support services to achieve improvements in success for all learners, and to significantly improve Māori, Pacific and Disabled learner retention, progression, achievement, and employment outcomes.

Working with the Director Ākonga Success, you will support the implementation of the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Students) Code of Practice 2021 across the Institute, and assist with the necessary annual self-review, reports and action plans.

The Ākonga Success Division structure includes:

  • Health Centre

  • Student Pastoral Support
  • Academic Support (incl Disability Services and Libraries)
  • Student Transition, Accommodation, Events Activities, (including the Recreation Centre, Career & Course Advisement and Employment)

  • Ability to build a positive team environment for teams that enhances wellbeing and maximizes opportunities for students to perform at their best.
  • Sufficient academic/educational background or demonstrated ability to quickly learn in order to support staff to meet the needs of future graduates.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and manage delivery of multiple and conflicting priorities.
  • Excellent writing skills, preparing and developing quality proposals and reports.
  • Experience in allocating resources, setting, monitoring, and meeting budgets.
  • Demonstrate awareness of equity, cultural and bicultural issues and a commitment to biculturalism and the ability to translate these into action, which result in improved educational performance for Māori and other priority learner groups.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to engage learners and colleagues.
  • Understands the importance of confidentiality and displaying discretion.
  • IT literate and highly skilled in using Microsoft Office tools, such as: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, and other people related databases.
