Purpose of the Position
The successful applicant for the Police Ambulance and Clinical Early Response (PACER) Team will provide clinical advice and input to the management and treatment of consumers referred to the PACER services. This care will be provided within the scope of practice endorsed by the Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC) and as outlined in the PACER model of care.
The position will provide clinical leadership to the respective PACER teams, ensuring comprehensive psychiatric assessments and appropriate management of consumers referred to the service, in accordance with the PACER model of care and stipulated clinical standards.
The post holder will be expected to consult and liaise with the relevant Emergency Departments and other clinical services of NSLHD to support and develop pathways to facilitate good clinical care for consumers and their families. There is also a specific requirement to assist in developing the Mental Health service and PACER service relationship with local Police/Ambulance services.
The incumbent will contribute to teaching and training of junior staff, medical students and graduate nursing students. He or she will support research, audits and quality improvement activities within the PACER service and the larger organisation. The position is ideally suitable for a psychiatrist trained in adult mental health and dual diagnosis who has experience working with adolescents and older people.
This position is temporary with the possibility of temporary extension based on performance, funding and need
Selection Criteria
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants must have Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) and recognition as a specialist by the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship within 3 months may be considered.

- Relevant clinical mental health experience in a community setting, which includes working with young people, adults and older people.
- Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate, postgraduate, interdisciplinary teaching and education, and the ability to lead and participate in collaborative research activities.
- High level interpersonal and communication skills and experience/involvement in quality assurance activities and evidence-based best practice.
- Demonstrate expert knowledge of clinical practice guidelines relating to the assessment and management of acute mental health or suicidal crisis
- Experience in teaching psychiatry to medical, nursing and allied health students/staff, psychiatry trainees and others as required and a willingness for ongoing involvement in such activities
- Demonstrated interest in improvement of clinical governance of mental health services, including quality improvement methodologies, experience or willingness to participate in clinical research and a commitment to fostering this interest in medical staff and other clinicians.
