As a result of the significant government reform agenda and Treaty partnership opportunities, the Te Whakaariki / Strategy & Influence team is expanding to be able to fulfil its mandate to protect and advance Ngāi Tahu Settlement and to influence and lead responses to legislative reform and policy processes.

Having recently strengthened our team of Senior Strategy Advisors and Senior Policy Advisors, we have some exciting opportunities for Policy Advisors to join Te Rūnanga and be at the cutting edge of iwi development and iwi kaitiakitanga. You will make a significant impact on behalf of Ngāi Tahu whānui, working to enable us to realise the Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu vision: ‘mō tātou, ā, mō kā uri ā muri ake nei’ (for us and our children after us).

Te Whakaariki / Strategy & Influence’s main objective is to protect and advance Settlement. This includes the commitment to fair and principled recognition of the rights and interests of Ngāi Tahu whānui, understanding Papatipu Rūnanga views, directly responding to and influencing central government reforms, and leading and contributing to legislative reform and policy processes. With an increased focus from government on issues facing iwi Māori, we are looking to expand upon our team of experts. We work across the pou of Settlement, Whenua, Moana, Tangata, General and Legislative Reform and Political Engagement. You can expect to be primarily focused on one of these pou, with the ability to work across others as required.

As a Policy Advisor you will produce high quality analysis, research and advice supporting the Te Whakaariki / Strategy & Influence work plan. This position offers a real opportunity to influence and produce high quality analysis, research and advice that has an immediate impact.

We are seeking an individual with:

  • An undergraduate qualification and up to five years’ experience in policy writing, research or equivalent relevant experience, or recent attainment of a relevant tertiary qualification
  • Experience or interest in providing policy analysis and the development and implementation of policies within the public sector and/or Treaty settlement experience
  • Experience or interest in iwi rights and interests

The successful applicant will have a strong desire to learn about the needs and aspirations of Ngāi Tahu whānui. Alongside this, you will have an understanding of, or an eagerness to learn and engage with our Ngāi Tahu values and te reo Māori. Ka tika!

Some additional benefits at Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu include a flexible working environment, te reo Māori and kapa haka tutorials, medical and life insurance, on-site parking, and if required, relocation assistance.
