About our Group

The Secondary Tertiary Group sits within Te Poutāhū (Curriculum) and covers the transition from senior secondary through to tertiary and employment.

Te Poutāhū works to make learning and teaching relevant, real and valued. We deliver and maintain critical services for the education sector to support responsive learner pathways from early childhood into further education, training, the workforce and society. Te Poutāhū performs a crucial role working between the strategy and policy teams, and the sector facing functions.

The Secondary Tertiary Group is responsible for operational policy, curriculum and support programmes for Year 11-13 learners, and the secondary-tertiary interface. This includes senior secondary curriculum, NCEA (including the ongoing NCEA Review and preparing for the Review of Achievement Standards) and secondary-tertiary pathways and transitions.

The Principal Adviser is part of the Teacher Only Day’s team that has been established to co-design and support the implementation of eight additional teacher only days.

The Principal Adviser leads, inspires, supports, and motivates others in the design and implementation of the goals, actions and purpose of the Ministry and intention and principals of the Secondary Tertiary team.

We are looking for someone who is thoughtful, agile and adept at handling ambiguity and complexity. Our ideal candidate will take pride in producing high quality work and will be comfortable working independently to achieve defined objectives. The person will be sensitive to cultural values and have a good understanding of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.

They will have sharp interpersonal skills, superior writing skills, and will be comfortable working with a diverse range of stakeholders and representing the Ministry.

Experience and qualifications

Candidates will have knowledge and/or experience in:

  • Providing high level advice, at a national level
  • Significant relationship building and management experience including liaising with, communicating to, consulting with and influencing stakeholders
  • Knowledge of and experience using the evidence base that supports quality education and leadership
  • Business and strategic reporting experience in government, in particular facilitating with senior leaders to achieve results
  • Sound understanding of the machinery of government, public sector delivery structures and systems
