Make a difference in the lives of rangatahi/youth – become a Transition Support Services Worker for Youth Services in YMCA Taranaki.

This exciting opportunity is a permanent 20 hours per week role for someone who is rangatahi focussed with a passion for making a difference and has flexibility to work weekends and evening hours if required.

The successful candidate will be predominantly working with young males referred to YMCA Taranaki through our Transition Support Services programme. The Transition Support Services Worker will support youth to transition out of care with a youth-led approach that empowers youth, develops their skills and experience, supports them to develop resilience, responsibility for themselves and focus on building a strong and lasting network of support.

The successful candidate will need:

  • At least 1 years’ experience working with youth or vulnerable people.
  • Experience in dealing with youth from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong cultural awareness and understanding of Te Ao Maori me ona Tikanga.
  • An understanding of disability, mental health, substance abuse and the impact these can have on young people.
  • An understanding of the impact of trauma, adolescent brain development and youth development approaches.
  • Knowledge of youth justice court processes and the role of Family Group Conferences preferred.
  • Experience in advocating on behalf of rangatahi.
  • Experience working with rangatahi from a range of cultures and backgrounds.
  • High standard of professionalism and integrity.
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of people and services with excellent engagement skills.
  • Experience in assessing and developing individual plans for rangatahi, that meet the needs of youth, assessing them to acquire new skills while increasing their confidence and motivation.
  • Strict adherence to health and safety standards and procedures.
  • Full clean driver’s licence is essential and the ability to drive a manual is essential.
  • Resilence with the ability to work under pressure.
  • Youth work or relevant qualification preferred but not essential.
  • Flexibility to work in different place settings to provide mentoring opportunities through sports, the arts etc and build their cultural awareness and skills.
