Kōrero mō te tūranga – About the role

Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a full-time, permanent Clinical Practice Manager to join Te Kura Mātai Hinengaro, The School of Psychology.

The Psychology Clinic provides outpatient clinical psychology services to the local community and plays a vital role in the training of clinical students. It sits at the heart of the training programme and provides a structured and scaffolded opportunity for students to begin implementing their learning in a practical setting working alongside clinical staff. All 5th year students have a 10-month placement at the Clinic, and it also provides a venue for 4th year students to have their first taste of clinical work.

The role of the Clinical Practice Manager is to act as team leader for the Clinical Practice Advisors with regard to the supervision and instruction of students and to assist the Clinical Director in the running and development of the programme in line with the School of Psychology and University’s strategic plans.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the Clinic.
  • Managing the Clinical Practice Advisors based in the clinic including performance development.
  • Overseeing liaison with external agencies providing placements for intern psychologists.
  • Supervising clinical students on placement in the clinic.
  • Ensuring that the assessment and treatment of clients meets the highest professional standards, taking overall clinical responsibility for clinical practice in the Clinic.
  • Supporting the development and delivery of teaching activities related to the Clinical Programme in conjunction with the Director of Clinical Training.
  • Engaging in professional activities in the local community to promote clinical psychology (e.g., meetings, professional presentations, consultation).

You will be a motivated, student-focused individual who can take the initiative, provide effective Clinic leadership and policy compliance.

You will thrive in this role with an excellent manner with people, an ability to influence and manage conflict, strong attention to detail, and self-management skills.

You will be a highly organised self-starter and natural relationship builder, who relishes working autonomously as well as contributing positively to a high performing team of clinical psychologists. You will need effective time management and forward planning to balance meeting deadlines and maintain a high standard of service to both students and clinical staff. The ability to remain calm under pressure and thrive working with a diverse range of stakeholders.

Key Requirements:

  • A New Zealand registered Psychologist in the Clinical Psychology Scope of Practice with at least 10 years of clinical experience, preferably with most of this experience in mental health settings.
  • An advanced research degree (preferably a PhD).
  • Competency and knowledge of evidence-based approaches to clinical psychology practice.
  • Experience and training in supervision of Clinical Psychologists and clinical psychology students.
  • Membership of appropriate New Zealand professional organisations.
  • Proven effectiveness in a management / team leader role.
  • Proven ability to work constructively and supportively with a wide range of people.
