Mō tō mātou rōpū – About the Team

The Māori Agribusiness (MAB) Directorate is responsible for contributing to the identification and implementation of viable primary sector economic development opportunities through the provision of information, intelligence and advice on issues specific to Māori; for ensuring MPI and MAB are well connected and engaged with relevant Māori fora, initiatives and people; and for providing advice and informing MPI on Māori-related issues and impacts.

Kōrero mō te tūranga – About the role

The Ministry for Primary Industries is looking for a Regional Adviser to join the Māori Agribusiness Directorate and report to the Regional Manager, you will be working towards increasing productivity of Māori primary sector assets by connecting people with resources.

If you know how to develop relationships, have knowledge of te reo Māori and can add value through thought leadership and writing good documents we would love to speak with you. Success in this role is the ability to be strategic and identify opportunities and engage with existing and new clients.

Your knowledge of the primary sector is important since you’ll be connecting individuals, whanau, hapū and iwi to programmes and funds in order to use their land and make it profitable. Understanding and staying on top of economic development in this sector is critical.

An understanding of Māori tikanga and kawa and being comfortable on marae is critical, along with proven business acumen that you can use to partner with national and regional Māori to enable sustainable use of natural resources.

Combine your tertiary qualification (economics, management, law, government, resource management, biological sciences, etc.) or corresponding/relevant experience and knowledge in the following:

• The primary sector or related industry or science-based organisation
• Tikanga Māori and te reo Māori to facilitate consultation processes and to effectively present information to different Māori groups
• Relationship management, including ability to build effective networks internally and externally
• The:
• primary production sector and rural community issues and impacts
• legislation and government policy affecting agriculture and the impacts on agriculture
• impact on New Zealand agriculture of international trading issues
• Applying a range of generalist and specialist skills including relationship management and project management to deliver a range of functions
• Crown’s obligations to Māori under the Treaty of Waitangi and other statutes as they relate to natural resources
• The machinery of government
• Primary sector innovation and industry-development context
• Writing, computer, and literacy skills, and
• Facilitation skills
