Data Collection Specialist / Matanga Kohi Raraunga – Seasonal, part time (North Wellington)

Mō te tūnga | The role

In your role as a Data Collection Specialist, you will report to a Team Leader Data Collection and work in close partnership with other Data Collection teams, to build relationships with the business and social communities of Aotearoa, enabling collection of data from all types of respondents via their channel of choice. The role is about providing a great user experience for respondents – one that builds trust, is seamless, convenient, safe and recognises their contribution to Aotearoa. Requirements in your role may change with the needs of the organisation.

The role has two key components. Firstly, it involves visiting selected households to conduct face-to-face interviews. The second requires calling or e-mailing selected businesses and/or households to conduct interviews via a channel of their choice and provide precontact support. We will set you up to work from home, and provide you with the equipment, training, and on-going support you need to succeed and remain safe while carrying out your work.


We guarantee a minimum of 37.5 hours of work per fortnight, but from time to time, there is more work available. This is a role in which hours will vary, and it includes evening as well as weekend work when required.


Salary: $24.34 – $27.77 per hour

  • 2 plus years’ experience working in customer service or a similar field
  • Attention to detail and high-quality output
  • Sense of civic duty and passion for serving the community
  • Understands the Treaty of Waitangi’s relevance to the role as a public servant
  • Support initiatives to increase responsiveness to Māori including actively working to better understand Te Ao Māori and build relationships with Iwi and Māori stakeholders
  • A data kaitiaki (guardian) who acknowledge an individual’s right to own and protect data yet can articulate and sell how a respondent’s data contributes to their community and Aotearoa.
  • Strong customer focus, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills
  • Work at times that suit survey participants, which will include evenings and weekends
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships quickly and collaborates effectively with other teams and subject matter experts
  • Adaptable and open to new, innovative approaches
  • Digital and technical literacy with good time-management skills
  • Has a continuous improvement mindset and speaks up about new ideas; challenges the status quo
  • Positive, self-motivated, and keen to develop new skills
  • Have access to fast and reliable internet services at home, which will be used for work-related activity
  • Have a current and full driver’s licence and a reliable road worthy vehicle with comprehensive insurance
