IT starts here
About Us/Mō mātou
We are the IT Support Services Team, on hand to provide nimble desktop and other relevant support across every corner of the University – that’s about 10,000 computers and encompasses some of the most cutting-edge tech you’ll ever see. Now, and into the future, our team is growing, and we need motivated IT graduates or technicians to help provide support that keeps all elements of the University humming.
If you’re looking for a fun and dynamic IT role to start or grow your career, this is it.
A real blend of spot-on problem solving, and customer support, it’ll be a daily test for your analytical mind, with plenty of opportunities to engage with and assist a fantastic range of people.
As you establish your IT career, do so with an employer who will back you to thrive. Whether that’s through flexible working arrangements, that help you to fit work around your life (not the other way around) or setting you up with a supportive team of seasoned professionals as eager to share their knowledge as you are to take it in. We’re also one of the country’s largest employers and we’re here to stay.
We’re committed to our people, because we know they’re who set us up for success.
Perhaps you’re a local, looking for an exciting change, but if you’re further flung and interested in a move, you’ll soon find out Dunedin offers unrivalled access to the much-coveted Kiwi lifestyle balance. Enjoy the thriving buzz of a student city, where there’s no shortage of things to do, (but a great pace-change from the hectic commutes and housing prices elsewhere in NZ), matched with easy access to adventure and scenery just outside of city limits.

The Role/Te mahi
As part of our Desktop Services team, you’ll be on hand to provide swift and effective IT desktop support and advice day to day – wherever the question or issue might come from. You’ll be able to diagnose and resolve problems across hardware, software, network, systems and other computing related tech, and be quick to spot and analyse performance issues that arise now, or could later.
If you can add to that some excellent communication skills that see you deliver effective assistance to students, support staff and other University stakeholders alike, you’ll thrive.
This is also the chance to grow your experience quickly and broadly because you can consider the University of Otago its own little city.
In no time, you’ll work across a huge range of hardware (from basic terminals to the best of the best in new tech), and software (Windows, Apple, Linux… it’s all here). You never know what tomorrow’s challenge will be, and that’s the thrill of it!
You’ll be backed by a supportive wider team who are as eager to impart their skills as you are to learn and develop.
Key tasks:
- Resolving PC related desktop support queries while also assisting with Apple technologies as required.
- Troubleshooting support requests on PC and Tablet devices and escalating any that are unable to be resolved.
- Working with your customer group to ensure all purchasing of new PC hardware and software is suitable and fits their needs.
- Implement backup, disaster recovery solutions and prevention in accordance with procedures.
- Proactively build and maintain strong collaborative relationships with clients, AskOtago and IT colleagues.
• Previous experience in Desktop Support related roles.
- Proven experience providing exceptional IT support.
- Experience with Windows and macOS diagnosing and troubleshooting hardware and software issues on desktops, laptops, mobile devices and tablets.
