About us/Mō mātou
Otago University Press (OUP) is the publisher of quality non-fiction books on New Zealand and the Pacific with a focus on history, Māori/Pacific, natural history, contemporary issues, biography/memoir, essays and creative non-fiction, literature and the arts. It also publishes a small amount of poetry as well as Landfall, New Zealand’s longest-running and leading journal of new writing and art.
The role/Te mahi
Each year OUP publishes about 20 books and two issues of Landfall and handles 150–200 unsolicited proposals and manuscript submissions.
As Editor, your main focus will be on managing the editorial production of all OUP Projects and performing editorial administration tasks as requested by the Publisher.
- Handling Otago University Press and Landfall email, responding to messages and/or forwarding them to appropriate people.
- Liaising with authors and freelance contractors to ensure the editorial schedule is managed in a coordinated and effective manner.
- Providing administrative support to the editors of Landfall and Landfall Review Online (LRO), as outlined in the operating manual.
- Ensuring the OUP contacts database is up to date and available to others.
- Logging incoming manuscripts and proposals and sending acknowledgement letters.
- Editing and proofreading manuscripts as required, dealing with authors’ responses to queries and corrections as appropriate.
Skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
- Good degree/s with a solid record of academic achievement.
- Relevant experience in publishing or other print and digital media.
- Responsible, well organised, efficient, enthusiastic, pleasant, with the ability to work successfully with a wide range of personalities and to apply lateral thinking.
- Highly literate, with strong language skills and keen knowledge of New Zealand culture and society.
- Administrative experience.
- Skilled user of Word, Excel and Adobe Acrobat.
- A relevant degree in publishing.
- Familiarity with Indesign, Photoshop or other publishing programmes.

This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week), permanent position.
The salary level for this position is provisionally evaluated at Level 6 (Appointment range $62,302 to $68,368) and is subject to change.
We offer competitive salary, five weeks’ annual leave, a 6.75% superannuation scheme, and the ability to achieve real work/life balance.
