Aotearoa New Zealand is facing a wide range of complex environmental issues and we are working collaboratively across the organisation to deliver on our Statement of Intent.
We are strengthening our Climate Directorate to ensure the successful delivery of our climate change work programme, which is focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to a changing climate.
We are looking for an experienced, strategic thinker to lead our Land Use Carbon Analysis System (LUCAS) team whose work ensures that Aotearoa meets its international greenhouse gas reporting obligations and tracks progress against its climate change targets. This includes providing evidence, research and evaluation into climate change policy.
LUCAS has a wider role across government providing information on land use and forestry for environmental reporting and to inform policy development. We also support the Ministry for Primary Industries and Department of Conservation in the delivery of their work programmes through our national forest inventories and geospatial data.
As a Manager you will be responsible for setting the strategic direction of the team, whilst working collaboratively across the directorate, and wider organisation, to achieve shared success. You will provide judgement and direction in an operating context that is often ambiguous, complex and politically charged. As a member of the management team you’ll have a key role in leading and driving the lift in evidence based policy.

- a background in climate change or regulatory policy, preferably grounded in science
- strategic leadership and intellectual capability

- a collaborative operating style
- intellectually sharp, capable, and agile you will lead, influence and manoeuvre through complex political situations effectively
- an ability to apply Māori worldviews in a way that makes a meaningful difference to policy advice, implementation, partnerships, and relationships with others
- commitment to developing your cultural capability and capacity in te ao Māori.
Most importantly, you will be passionate about looking for new and innovative ways of achieving positive environmental outcomes.
Salary Range
$155,491 to $190,044 pa. Appointment within this range will be based on skills and experience.
