The Bachelor of Applied Science (BAppSci.) with specialisations in Nutrition, Sport and Exercise Science, and Health Promotion) has been delivered at Ara since 2009. The programme has strong links to industry and aligns with the Ara Strategic Plan which emphasises applied, work integrated learning that develops graduates who are ready for industry. The BAppSci. is part of a portfolio of Science and Health-related provision within the Department of Applied Sciences and Social Practice. The Department delivers to several sciences, health science, and health-related sectors in Canterbury with, Social Work, Musculoskeletal Health, Osteopathy and the BAppSci degrees.
Graduates of the degree programme continue to demonstrate personal, high order thinking skills and attributes required to work competently in the Sport Science, Nutrition and Health Promotion areas depending on their area of specialisation. The BAppSci. continues to use an engaging, flexible and blended learning design in the teaching and learning delivery that is facilitated by highly qualified staff with industry experience.
Mō tēnei tūranga mahi – About the role
This role will primarily involve taking an academic role and teaching predominantly into the Nutrition and Sport Science specialisations of the Bachelor of Applied Science. The successful applicant should have expertise in Nutrition and be able to teach from level 400 to level 700 in areas (not limited to) such as General Nutrition, Sports Nutrition, Lifestyle and Health, Nutritional Management, and other general sport science areas.
The successful applicant will work with stakeholders and department staff and will be involved in the development and delivery of course materials and the associated assessment of course work along with assisting in the placement of students in the student placement programme and possibly contributing to the department research portfolio. Opportunities will also be available to work within our Health and Wellness centre – The Zone, to enable the department to diversify their income through commercial projects and work placement opportunities for students.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako – Skills/Experience
- A postgraduate qualification in Nutrition with emphasis on Sports Nutrition would be preferred but not essential.
- Related work experience in fields relevant to position (min 3‐5 years)
- Experience as an educator, preferred a completed adult teaching qualification e.g., NZCATT
- Current Driver’s License
- Digital literacy including – competence using a computer (including Microsoft office products)
- Effective communication with a diverse range of others, at all levels within and outside the organisation
- Passionate about Sport Science, Physical Activity & or Health promotion
- Experienced in using a range of teaching methods and technologies in a tertiary setting
