The George Institute’s food policy team work in Australia and overseas, to reduce death and disease caused by diets high in salt, harmful fats, added sugars and excess energy. The team does multi-disciplinary research with a focus on outputs that will help government and industry deliver a healthier food environment for all.

We are now seeking to engage a Research Associate or Research Fellow who will support work on salt substitution and transforming the world’s salt supply. The successful candidate will work on a project aiming to develop strategies to substitute the global salt supply, with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries, and related projects. The successful candidate is also required to play a role in establishing new studies and working on existing studies, as well as assisting in the development of new proposals and funding applications.

Duties and Key Responsibilities

• Work with a multidisciplinary team in the Institute to implement a work program designed to support countries around the world to switch their salt supply to a salt substitute supply
• Engage with overseas partners to understand the social, political, regulatory, and economic factors influencing the feasibility of scaling up salt substitution
• Work with the team to develop and support the rollout of country-specific plans for switching the salt supply to a salt substitute supply
• Work with the Senior Research Fellow and other team members in developing new study proposals
• Take the lead and assist with writing manuscripts and grant applications
• Maintain existing collaborations and establish others
• Provide support and co-supervision of post-graduate students, as required
• Ensure that research being conducted is congruent with world best practice
• Actively develop and promote the culture of The George Institute by ensuring all interactions, documentation and communication are of the highest standard and supports the mission.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

Essential

• Relevant health/medical qualification, including a Masters and/or PhD
• At least 3+ years’ research experience in a health or related sector in an academic research environment
• Emerging publication track record
• Strong problem solving, analytical skills and strategic thinking
• Excellent time management and organisational skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well and flexibly i.e. autonomously, in small teams and with a wide range of varying stakeholders
• Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of products (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and the Internet)
• Ability to be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing organisational priorities and ambiguous environments

Desirable

• Research experience in food policy and salt reduction
• Demonstrated experience in the development and coordination of clinical trials
• Experience in writing grant applications
• Ability to supervise PhD students
• Willingness to travel when circumstances allow.
