NIWA is a dynamic research organisation and New Zealand’s largest and pre-eminent provider of climate, freshwater and marine science. Our core purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand’s aquatic resources and environments, to provide an understanding of climate and the atmosphere, and increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders.

What we’re looking for:

We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher to join CarbonWatch-NZ, a five-year programme that involves close collaborations across multiple research teams across New Zealand as well as international partners. The successful applicant will establish an urban scale atmospheric inverse model for Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city and home to about a third of the population. The inverse model will use measurements from a newly established network of observing stations that include continuous measurements of CO2, CO, and CH4 from in situ analysers and discrete measurements of air in flasks that also include radiocarbon and carbonyl sulphide. This urban measurement network is a close collaboration between NIWA and our sister research organisation, GNS Science. The inverse model will use the NAME III dispersion model driven by winds from New Zealand’s regional implementation of the UK Met Office Unified Model, which are available at 1.5 km and 300m resolution.

The position will be physically based at NIWA in Wellington, but the successful applicant will work closely with GNS Science also located in Wellington.

What you will bring:

Candidates are expected to have a PhD or equivalent experience in atmospheric science or a related field. They require strong analytical, statistical, and programming skills and the ability and aptitude to network with other New Zealand experts on the carbon cycle. A background or interest in inverse modelling, Lagrangian modelling or in situ and/or remote-sensing trace gas measurements is also desirable.

As an engaging team player, you will enjoy working with collaborators in New Zealand and overseas, communicating positively with a wide range of staff. You will have initiative, be results-oriented and well organized. You will have good writing skills including technical reporting, documentation, and research publications. You will enjoy living in one of the most liveable, highly rated capital cities of the world, starting as soon as possible.

We don’t expect perfection in our candidates – if you think you have what it takes, but don’t meet every point referenced in the position description, please still get in touch!

NIWA offers flexible working options (e.g., part-time, flexible start and finish times). We are happy to discuss potential flexible options for this position at the interview stage.

NIWA promotes the importance and value of an inclusive and diverse workforce, including the Rainbow Community, and pride ourselves on being a family-friendly and supportive workplace.
