Join the Cancer Care Team at Middlemore Hospital and help to make a difference in the lives of many.

The objective of the role is to improve the experience for patients, including family and whanau, with cancer or suspected cancer by delivering evidence based interventions and assessments. This will improve the overall access and timeliness of access to psychological and social support services for patients with cancer.

In this role, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide psychological assessments and interventions for patients. You will also provide a range of other services to support the development and function of the team and the organisation as a whole. Some of these activities will include case consultation, staff training and supervision, leadership and involvement in service development activities, and research and evaluation-related activities.

This role will include working closely with the team’s two social workers, health psychologist and an intern psychologist. While the Cancer Support team is based at Middlemore Hospital, outpatient care is delivered across other sites in the Counties Manukau area and will involve a small amount of inpatient work.

This position will involve the ongoing design, development and implementation of a psychological service that meets the needs of patients who are being investigated, diagnosed, and/or are being treated for cancer. Health Psychologists working within this role will provide individual psychological care to patients and their whaanau as well as developing and providing psycho-educational groups to improve the wellbeing and adjustment of patients.

A key part of this role will be working with cancer care co-ordinators and other health professionals to further develop their skills in providing supportive care, and to improve supportive care systems for cancer patients. The health psychologist will form strong links with palliative care, community heath, allied health services and non-government providers with the aim of enhancing outcomes for patients and their whaanau.
