He angitūtanga: About the Role
The Biodiversity Monitoring Team is looking for exceptional staff members to deliver biodiversity monitoring work across New Zealand. You will provide specialist skills and experience for the operational delivery of the national biodiversity monitoring programme. This will entail a significant allocation of fieldwork to collect biodiversity monitoring data from a wide range of sites and projects plus providing office-based advice when requested. You will be part of a national team and may have responsibilities that extend beyond the location where you reside. Put simply, these are specialist technical monitoring roles that involve a large proportion of time in the field across many different sites.
We have multiple positions available, depending on the preference of the successful candidate and the needs of the team at each location, these roles could be based in Hokitika, Invercargill, Palmerston North or Rotorua. These are permanent full-time positions working 40-hour weeks over winter, and from September till March, work on a roster approx. 12 days on, 6 days off (40hr week average). Permanent part-time is also an option for these positions

You will bring to this role your strong communication skills and a genuine interest in teamwork, collaboration and supporting us to deliver positive outcomes for our taio. You will be keen to be a part of creating a positive, safe, diverse, and inclusive culture here at Te Papa Atawhai.
If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:
- A range of biodiversity monitoring experience
- Experience or comfortable working with whānau, hapū and iwi, with an understanding of te ao Māori
- Computer skills with confidence in Excel and Word
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal
- Proven ability operating in the backcountry, communicating effectively and getting on well with others in a small team
- Physically fit and able to carry a full pack for three hours off track
- Able to regularly spend long periods of time (up to 2 weeks) away from home
- Preferably have a current full New Zealand Drivers Licence
Desirable specialist skills and experience within two or more of the following areas:
- Experience in 20 x 20 plot measurement,
- Experience supervising and leading a team in the field
- Plant identification,
- Bird identification, preferably 5 minute bird counts
- Animal pest monitoring, preferably ungulate pellet counts and possum monitoring
- A tertiary qualification or equivalent experience and achievements in science or natural heritage management are desirable.

The salary range for this position is $53,776 up to $61,706 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
