SBS Diversity Talent Escalator Placement – Position Description – Associate Producer on Nightbloomers

SBS and Turn About Entertainment are searching for an Associate Producer to work on Night Bloomers as part of the SBS Diversity Talent Escalator program.


What is the SBS Diversity Talent Escalator program?

The SBS Diversity Talent Escalator (‘DTE’) is a national initiative focused on creating opportunities for creatives from under-represented communities within the television production sector. The DTE is a partnership between SBS and each of Australia’s screen agencies, Film Victoria, Screen NSW, Screen Queensland, Screen Territory, Screenwest, South Australian Film Corporation, Screen Canberra and the Tasmanian Government through Screen Tasmania.

The national initiative creates career development opportunities for emerging and mid-level screen practitioners from backgrounds under-represented within the Australian screen industry.

The DTE provides opportunities for participants to work with production companies of SBS commissioned programs, in roles that are a step up from their existing level of experience.

Since 2017, SBS has supported more than 30 DTE positions including Associate Producer, Production Manager, Assistant Editor, Director’s Attachment and other roles.

DTE participants have worked on a wide variety of programs across the documentary, factual, food, entertainment, comedy/drama and drama slates. Most recently with the studio-based Mastermind, other examples include factual series Lost For Words, Come Fly with Me and scripted shows Hungry Ghosts, New Gold Mountain, and The Tailings.

SBS and the state and territory agencies collaborate with production companies working on SBS commissioned programs, to secure flexible, on-the-job, paid learning and immersion opportunities.

Who can apply?

We are seeking candidates who come from a range of lived experiences and identify as coming from an under-represented community including people who are culturally and linguistically diverse, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability and people who identify as LGBTIQ+.

Applicants to the Talent Escalator:

  • Must be residents of the screen agency’s state
  • Must demonstrate the applicant is from a diverse background or an under-represented community
  • Can demonstrate significant commitment to working in a related technical discipline within the screen industry and mid to long term commitment to career development in the TV and film industry
  • Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Must be 18 years old or above; and
  • Must not be a full time student


1. Program title: Night Bloomers

2. Program description: Night Bloomers is an anthology of horror stories from the Korean diaspora and their distinct relationship with mortality.

3. Diversity Talent Escalator role title: Associate Producer

4. Location: Sydney. It will be a combination of remote WFH, production office for pre-production as well as on-set from time to time based in New South Wales.

5. Placement Period:
Start: 30th May 2022
Finish: 12th July 2022
Total Weeks: 11 weeks
How many days per week: 5 days per week

Hours: 7 am to 6 pm. Note: actual hours may vary.

6. Production dates of the program:

Pre-Production: 30th May 2022
Production: 20th June 2022
Post-Production: 11th June 2022

7. Supervision

During the placement, the participant will be primarily supervised by the Producers at Turn About Entertainment.

The participant will also be able to contact the SBS Content Industry Diversity Manager Michelle Cheng, throughout the placement

8. How will the placement provide a ‘level up’ for participants?
This opportunity will provide participants with the opportunity to extend their existing skill set and gain experience which is a level up from their existing skill set.

  • As a small team this position offers the ability to see multiple aspects of various roles. We are able to offer flexibility in creating a role that will offer the candidate an opportunity to focus on areas they hope to gain further skills in. They will be involved in all stages of the production from early pre-production through to post-production.

  • We’d like to offer the candidate the chance to own the tasks allocated to them, particularly when it comes to the development of social media and BTS content. We believe this will provide a creative outlet where they can engage in our story world. Offering a birds’ eye view of the production financing with no limits will allow them access to all of the contracting and overall picture of what is required and how the finance is being utilised. We are invested in providing an environment for all team members to grow and learn, we’d like to put aside time weekly to meet and review the Associate Producers roles and responsibilities.

9. Job description/Key tasks and responsibilities

As Associate Producer you will support the work of the Producers in pre-production, production and post-production. The role has a specific emphasis on production logistics and working in a small busy and diverse team environment.


  • Support the Producers in managing the show production team
  • Assisting with the establishment of a production office
  • Liaising with agents and talent
  • Hiring, arranging and organising crew members and supervising production personnel
  • Facilitating production meetings, calendar management, drafting production schedules and administrative tasks as required
  • Sourcing quotes for production services and managing relationships with key suppliers
  • Coordinating behind the scenes photography and interviews
  • Managing social media platforms (Instagram) and creating content


  • Reviewing contracts, including cast deal memos and agreements, crew agreements, location agreements
  • Cost Report Meetings

10. Training objectives and learning goals

  • Gain a thorough understanding of the requirements of setting up a production
  • Deepen understand of production finance and contracting requirements when working with screen agencies, broadcasters and producer offset
  • Building relationships with key industry partners and crew
  • Increased understanding of developing marketing and social media campaigns
