New Plymouth District Council plays a key role in supporting community well-being, the economy, the environment and the overall quality of life in the New Plymouth District. To fulfil that role we need great people on board, and right now we are looking for a highly motivated and experienced lawyer to join our Risk, Legal and Assurance Team. While we prefer full time applicants we will consider part time availability.

The successful candidate will be familiar with a range of commercial, regulatory, and enforcement matters, and be able to provide practical advice and review of legal documents. They will work on various matters to assist Council staff to manage their legal risks and maintain compliance with legislative requirements. Ideally the successful candidate will have experience practising in a local government environment but this is not a pre-requisite.

Risk, Legal and Assurance Lead
To provide and deliver high quality and relevant legal services support and advice.
Internal – Functional Managers, Operational Managers and Professional Leads.
External – Legal firms, central government and local government personnel, contractors and consultants.
Provides robust and practical internal legal advice and well researched advice on relevant legislative changes to a range of staff.
Liaises with external providers to ensure the provision of effective and value adding services and advice to the Council as required.
Ensures that legal delegation processes are promoted and well managed to guide managers to work within their assigned accountabilities/ delegations.
Actively ensures that legislative requirements and Council policies and procedures are fulfilled, particularly in relation to all key relevant legislation.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:
Developed annually and form part of performance and team plans.
Works collaboratively with others to enhance and develop team performance.
Is responsible and accountable for own actions and day-to-day decision making.
Effective performance and delivery within a political environment.
Maintains cultural awareness and keeps up-to-date with issues affecting the community.
Sets high standards of personal performance.
Degree in Law.
Current New Zealand practising certificate.
Minimum three years’ experience in providing legal services, ideally with some in a local government environment but this is not required.
