Emerge Aotearoa is a national provider of mental health, addiction, disability, offender rehabilitation, wellbeing and housing services. We believe that everyone is capable of living full and rich lives in their communities of choice. In every aspect of our work we are committed to helping whānau be the best they can be.

Based in Lower Hutt, this six-bed residential service delivers a mix of crisis and planned respite, and short-term support for youth.


He kōrero mō te tūranga | The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of an essential service. You will join a passionate and professional team and support tāngata whaiora by assisting them to develop and maintain living skills, relationships, and daily activities so they may be active participants in their recovery and their communities. You will provide day to day support in alignment with identified goals and support plans, including risk management and safety plans.

You’ll also be given the opportunity to be upskill and train further in the mental health field. You will be well supported by your colleagues, service manager, health professionals and the wider emerge whanau. This is a fantastic opportunity to have a direct impact on the lives of people in the community to help them to reconnect, learn, grow, and live as independently as possible.

This service operates 24/7, so shifts are allocated on a rotating roster across the morning, afternoon and overnight, Monday through Sunday. This is a permanent, full time opportunity (40 hours per week).


He kōrero mōu | About You

The ideal candidate is someone who has youth/peer support/crisis respite work experience. Has an eye for spotting changes to behaviour, can respond appropriately to crisis situations and observes professional boundaries working with youth.

You will be someone who is positive, flexible, vibrant, confident, and compassionate to work in our service. You’ll contribute to maintaining a safe working environment and create a safe, calm, and nurturing spaces whānau. You’ll encourage whānau to engage in therapy, meaningful programmes, and educational/vocational activities.

To be successful in this role, you’ll need a Level 4 in Health & Wellness qualification. Previous knowledge and experience of working with people with a complex mental health diagnosis’ is desirable but not essential. Your passion for supporting people is the most important however a major requirement.

You will be comfortable in tikanga Māori environment and have the ability to work alongside people of all ages and diverse personalities. You will be resilient and be able to think on your feet while keeping calm and remaining patient in all situations.
