We are seeking an experienced lab animal caretaker to engage, care and maintain facilities in support of our Dementia Research program.

We are seeking an enthusiastic Animal Caretaker to provide a high level of care to animals and maintain facilities to support research programs being undertaken by the Dementia Research Centre. Key contributions from this role will include monitoring and maintaining the Dementia Research Centre’s (DRC) mouse colonies to a high scientific standard, providing regular reports to the Centre Manager, assist with data collection and assist with the breeding program for the DRC. The Animal Caretaker will work directly with the Centre Manager, and other staff and students in the Dementia Research Clinic and assist with any other tasks as required.
About You
Your skills and experience gained in a laboratory where the use of animals for research purposes was practiced, will transfer well to this environment. Previous experience in an animal research facility, including experience in providing care of animals, is preferred. Drawing on your experience gained in a tertiary environment, you will work with minimum supervision, show initiative, and anticipate requirements, ensuring deadlines and objectives are met and effective written and verbal communication with our stakeholders is made.

Essential Selection Criteria :

Relevant qualifications in Animal Care and Management.

Experience in animal handling.

Experience in animal colony data record keeping.

Familiarity with health status checking procedures in mice.

Applying workplace health and safety practices and principles.

Working independently and as part of a team.

Computer skills including Microsoft Office, web-based applications
Desirable selection criteria :

Working in an animal research facility, including experience in providing care to animals.

Knowledge of workplace health and safety legislation, principles and practices applicable to laboratories and relevant research areas.

Knowledge of Animal Ethics legislation and welfare requirements in accordance with the NHMRC Code of Practice, the NSW Animal Research Act, and the Animal Ethics Committee and PC2.
Other Specific Requirements :
This position requires you to comply with occupational screening, assessment and vaccinations in line with Macquarie University requirements.
