Ko waimātou | About Us:
Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura) is New Zealand’s largest state school with over 25,000 ākonga(students) per year. We provide distance education from early childhood level to NCEA Level 3, including to young adult and adult ākonga. This year we celebrate 100 years of educating more than 1.5 million young New Zealanders. Te Kura has been called on over the years to supplement learning for New Zealand children during major public health crises, from polio and influenza epidemics to the present COVID-19 pandemic, as well as providing support to ākonga after the Christchurch earthquakes.
Our vision is for our ākonga to achieve their educational and personal goals, enabling them to become engaged and contributingmembers of their communities. That means putting our ākonga at the centre of their learning by providing a flexible, personalised approach, so that they can choose when and where they learn. Ki tetī, ki tetā, ki tekatoa – Anytime, anywhere, anyone.
Mōtēneitūranga mahi | About this position:
It is a busy time at Te Kura as we develop our digital and data strategy, changing the way we work with data, moving into a more automated and integrated environment that uses modern data stacks and BI tools. On this journey of building systems capability, Te Kura has an exciting opportunity for a Data Analyst to join our team based in Wellington.
The position sits within the Office of the Chief Executive – a small team providing high-quality advice and support to the Board of Trustees, Chief Executive, Deputy Chief Executives, and other Te Kura kaimahi. The Data Analyst supports effective school-wide data analysis, reporting and planning processes and contributes to enhanced school performance in teaching and learning, student engagement and ultimately student achievement.
The role reports to the Manager Data and Analytics andrequires close collaboration with other business units such as the Information Resource Group (IT), our Ākonga and Whanau Support, Qualifications and Finance teams. It supports all levels of staff, from our kaiako (teachers) to the Chief Executive and the Board of Trustees, and we pride ourselves on providing outstanding service in a fast-paced, busy environment to technical and non-technical audiences, while also being able to have a laugh, so a good sense of humour is a must.
Ko koe tēnei | About you:
This is a great opportunity for a Data Analyst to have a direct impact on the lives of thousands of ākonga in one of the most interesting, innovative and challenging parts of the education sector. You are someone who can bring together their experience of analysing, interpreting and scrutinising financial and non-financial data with the ability of communicating the findings to a wide audience, speaking the business users’ language and translating data into an exciting story that engages and motivates.
Your advanced Excel skills will help you settle into the role and understand where we are today, how we got there, and keep the wheels turning while we plan and execute the next steps of automation and data integration. Here your experience with MS PowerBI and PowerAutomate will really shine and take our analysis and business intelligence processes to the next level.
As we embark on this journey we will have to take our business users with us, so you will bring the ability to teach the basics to a wide group, while also forming a community of practice with other analysts at Te Kura. And speaking of teaching: an understanding of and experience working in the Education Sector, as well as knowledge of student and learning management systems are a clear advantage.
You are comfortable working with all levels of staff, providing confident and sound advice. Excellent relationship management and communication skills, the ability to work as part of a team as well as independently are an absolute must.
In a nutshell, we are looking for someone with:
- In-depth experience working in an analyst role, preferably in an education or similar setting
- Outstanding data visualisation skills, in particular experience working with MS Power BI
- Experience with data automation and integration, MS Azure and Power Automate
- Advanced skills in MS Excel, knowledge of VBA, confident with Office 365
