Southland Hospital

Southern DHB is currently seeking an Emergency Department Registrar to join our supportive, training-focused ED.

The Role

You’ll be part of a close-knit team of eight FACEMs, eight Registrars, two MOSS, and seven House Officers managing over 39,000 patients annually (21% Paediatrics), with a full case-mix including a relatively high level of major trauma. All major specialties are on site.


  • 12 months ACEM accreditation for advanced training
  • ACEM Paediatric logbook accreditation
  • Dedicated 6m Anaesthetics term available to ED trainees
  • ACEM Part I and II exam preparation programmes with high pass rate (2/2 Fellowship 2019)
  • EM Diploma and Certificate supervision (5 Certificate graduates past 3 years)
  • 4 hours per week protected teaching time, consultant led. All registrars.
  • 15 hours per day of direct FACEM on-floor supervision
  • Rotations to accredited specialty inpatient units available. Paediatrics includes neonatal unit.
  • More hands-on experience- your patient, your procedure!

Southland Hospital is a modern, 180+ bed, secondary level 4 base hospital situated in Invercargill, New Zealand. The Hospital services a population of approximately 108,000 throughout Invercargill, Queenstown, Gore, Stewart Island and rural Southland.

  • We are interested in hearing from RMOs with a minimum of 3 years post qualification experience, including at least six months ED experience.
  • You must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand, and be eligible for general or provisional general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. You can check your eligibility for registration by visiting the Council’s website at
  • A current CV and cover letter.
  • Contact details for 3 Consultants we may contact directly for references. These Consultants will have supervised your day-to-day clinical work and one of the referees provided must be from your current or most recent employer. Please ensure you advise your referees of their nomination so they are aware they will be contacted by the Southern DHB.

Candidates who are not currently registered with the New Zealand Medical Council should be aware that it is a requirement of the NZ Medical Council that your qualifications are approved through EPIC. If you have a commitment to working in New Zealand it is highly recommended that you start this process as soon as possible so as to allow your subsequent registration to be undertaken in a timely fashion.
