About the Opportunity:

HBRC has a great opportunity for three students to work with the Water Quality and Ecology Team and gain practical experience to complement their studies. We are looking for students with a passion for the environment to assist our team of technicians over the summer months to monitor our beautiful rivers, lakes, estuaries and coastal environment.

These fixed-term positions will be available for up to 20 weeks from November 2022 to March 2023. Exact dates will be determined by student availability and project needs.

The core responsibilities for our summer students will be to assist the team with the recreational bathing beach and ecosystem health monitoring programmes. Students will assist with special investigations and state of environment monitoring when required and may have the opportunity to develop skills in a range of monitoring equipment and techniques, including:

Macroinvertebrate sampling
Freshwater fish monitoring
Periphyton, macrophyte and habitat assessments
Estuarine infauna sampling
Water sampling
Flow measurements
Use of field equipment, loggers and databases

About you:

We are looking for friendly, well-organised people that can show high levels of initiative and the ability to work independently or as a team when required.

You will have completed or be studying towards a degree in biology, ecology or environmental science. You’ll be confident working in and around waterways and undertaking long days of solo driving and fieldwork. So, a current full drivers license is essential and if you’ve driven a 4WD it’s an added bonus.
