About our group and team
Learning Support is a critical part of the Te Mahau-Te Tai Runga. Our role is to support the education sector in ensuring that children and young people with additional learning needs achieve their full potential in their education pathway.
Our Learning Support specialists work closely with whānau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and Māori medium settings and other agencies to help maximise learning outcomes and promote social inclusion.

About this role
As a Kaitakawaeka you will play a critical role in our region’s Learning Support team by;
- Working proactively with Māori tamariki, whānau, hāpu and iwi, educators, and colleagues to identify and eliminate barriers to access to learning support services.
- Working to develop appropriate communications, consultation, and co-operation to promote a well-learning lifestyle for Māori tamariki and rakatahi requiring quality supports across all education settings
- Connecting key outcomes for whānau and educators with specialist staff and agencies
- Integrating Te Ao Māori to endorse and strengthen cultural solutions for the learner and whānau
- Working effectively as part of a trans-disciplinary team.
About you
To be successful you will need;
- A subject relevant diploma qualification (minimum two years study) or higher
- Te Reo me ona tikaka, ability to build trusting relationships, communication and lived experience
- At least three years teaching te reo Māori or three years working in the community in Māori development
- Have a high level of competence and fluency in Te Reo Māori me ona tikaka and be able to link this expertise to work alongside colleagues and specialists in a bi-cultural way
- Ability to work effectively in Māori medium education – Ngā kōhanga reo, Te kura kaupapa, Te Wharekura. Understand English medium education system.
