Āu Mahi | What You Will Do

We have an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join our team on a Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment Endeavour Research Programme that bridges the colleges of Science and Engineering. The project leverages the University of Canterbury’s world-leading 3D printing capabilities to develop porous media for process engineering applications. This research will create the materials, tools and technologies required to design, optimize and build industrial equipment with vastly improved efficiency over existing processes and generate expert design consultancy and manufacturing opportunities and transformational business potential for New Zealand.

Your role will be to develop and support our work using Computational Fluid Dynamics to study the flow through these porous materials. The challenge here is to develop an approach that permits accurate characterisation of the flow, heat and mass transfer through micro-structured materials, but with the capability of simulating full process scale equipment. You will be working with a multidisciplinary team including experimental projects and software engineers. A detailed knowledge of openFOAM, or other computational fluid dynamics software is highly desirable for this role.

Mōu | Who You Are
You will hold a Bachelor’s degree and a PhD in engineering or a related discipline, or have equivalent industry experience, as well as the following:

  • Familiar with openFOAM or another leading CFD toolbox;
  • Experience developing computational fluid dynamics models, and effectively critiquing the results of the simulations;
  • Experience with validation and verification of CFD models;
  • Proven ability to work across multi-functional teams.

You will have a high degree of initiative and an ability to identify and act on opportunities. Additionally, you will also have strong interpersonal skills and a proven ability to communicate complex ideas and concepts (both orally and in writing) to a wide variety of groups.

Mahi Ngātahi | Who You Will Work With
The Biomolecular Interaction Centre (BIC) is a multi-disciplinary research centre, founded in 2007 at the University of Canterbury. It includes researchers from UC’s Colleges of Science and Engineering and partners with several New Zealand Crown Research Institutes, universities and Callaghan Innovation. In 2019, the centre was awarded a major MBIE Endeavour Programme (NZ$9.8M over five years) to investigate 3D-Printed Porous Media for Process Engineering. The programme covers fundamental engineering sciences, with applications including protein and virus purification, heat exchange, catalysis, tissue scaffolding and filtration.
