Puke Ariki is a place where people come together and where there is a place for everyone. Situated at an old pā site, Puke Ariki is a storehouse for Māori taonga, Taranaki information, heritage and stories to inspire creativity, enrich lives, connect local people and visitors to new ideas and other cultures from around the world.
An opportunity has arisen within the Visitor Experiences team for the role of Visitor Hosts/Pou Rarou. Our Visitor hosts are the first point of contact for visitors to the Museum. Hosts provide information to assist visitors gain a deeper appreciation of the exhibitions and experiences on offer. No two days are the same—you could be assisting in the delivery of public programme one day to leading formal or informal tours the next. We provide a range of training programmes to get you up and running and inspire you to grow your experience and knowledge within the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) sector.
Hosts are also expected to:
Maintain health and safety, high standards of presentation within the public spaces of the museum; reporting hazards and security breaches that occur
Continuously learn about the heritage and stories of Taranaki; content in the long-term galleries and temporary exhibitions
Be an active team member committed to working collaboratively and towards continuous improvement
As a combined facility of Museum, Library and Visitor Information, honouring mana whenua, growing our understanding of mātauranga Māori and tikanga, respecting all cultures and promoting lifelong learning underpin the work we do. Critical to your success is your comfort in applying this in all facets of the Visitor Host role.
We have a vacancy for a part-time fixed-term position with 121 hours over a four-week period. This comes with an opportunity for additional hours from time to time. This is a rostered position which includes 2 weekends of work within the four-week period and public holidays to cover the 364 days of operation.
To be successful in this role, you must:
Have a knowledge of Māori tikanga
Fluent speaker or willingness to learn te reo Māori is desirable
Be passionate about working with museum visitors and sharing your knowledge about the heritage of Taranaki
Have a strong awareness of health and safety and how this applies in a museum setting
Be able to inspire a group with your confidence
Be energetic and physically fit to be on your feet for most of the day
Understanding of customer service within the (GLAM) sector would be an advantage.
