Job Description

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
This Position is a 29-month fixed term, part time appointment (0.4 FTE, 15 hours per week)
The Research Technician will provide key technical support for staff and students involved in laboratory studies concerned with developing methods to deliver therapeutic compounds to the inner ear to treat deafness and ear disease. This research is developing novel delivery approaches using a combination of studies on physical models of the inner ear and live inner ear tissues from sheep and is undertaken in collaboration with other groups in New Zealand. In addition to specific tasks related to the project the Research Technician will also be involved in general laboratory duties, maintaining the work environment and ordering supplies.
Knowledge and Skills

  • Support the ongoing operational requirements for the Inner Ear Drug Delivery project, as directed
  • Ensure all consumables and materials are purchased and stocked appropriately to meet planned activities, and undertake inventory functions and any due diligence (financial and regulatory) as required
  • Liaise regularly with the research team to arrange appropriate storage or disposal of materials, substances, and samples, in line with established protocols
  • Ensure assigned facilities are maintained to a high standard ensuring ongoing functionality, availability to users, and regulatory compliance
  • Assist the research team, including collaborators outside Auckland, to produce outputs of publishable quality by reliably following established procedures and direction
  • Carry out laboratory work accurately and under guidance to produce required materials and experimental data or
  • Assist with interpretation of experimental outcomes
  • Assist with development of new experimental protocols and techniques
  • Participate and contribute to group meetings (e.g., lab, research team)
  • Recognise the commercial sensitivity associated with the research project and comply with the group’s guidelines with regard to data security, communication, disclosure and record-keeping.
  • To support the team to deliver the project mile stones by coordinating with research team.

Technically competent in lab-based research, you will be able to work well within a close-knit team, maintaining the utmost confidentiality in a commercially sensitive environment. You will have experience with biomedical aspects such as imaging, histology, and animal experimentation.
