Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the Role

The Regulatory Strategy Team has an ambitious and varied work programme, with strategy, policy and operational responsibilities. As part of the Economic Strategy Directorate, we have a key role to play in thinking about the role of regulation in lifting living standards. We have two major cross-system leadership roles:

  • Leading thinking on Regulatory Stewardship (which is the governance, monitoring and ongoing care of regulatory systems) in order to improve regulatory performance and reduce failures, and;
  • Overseeing and running the Regulatory Impact Analysis system, which aims to lift the quality of regulatory reform or new regulation so that it achieves its desired outcomes.

In this role you will:

  • Lead projects aimed at addressing issues that are common across regulatory systems, such as barriers to regulatory stewardship;
  • Lead thinking on how regulation can better contribute to lifting living standards
  • Provide advice to agencies on how to meet Cabinet’s Regulatory Impact Analysis requirements for major regulatory reforms; and
  • Lead the delivery of improvements to the RIA system.

We are seeking a candidate with at least five years’ experience working in a public policy or regulatory role. You will also bring:

  • A highly collaborative approach to your work
  • Critical thinking through constructive debate
  • The ability to coach and support junior staff
  • Comfort working at pace (when required) and dealing with ambiguity
  • Great communication skills and EQ
  • The ability to motivate and influence others
  • A strong delivery focus
