Senior OR Principal Advisor – Privacy & Legal – Public Sector – Hourly Rate Contract – ASAP for 6 months + extensions – Wellington – Part-time or Full-time Hours – JOB Ref #MT6100

Our client is looking for an experience privacy contractor at the principal or senior advisory level to work as part of a small team to support a large programme of work. The role will provide support to complete PIA’s and will work closely with the in-house legal team to provide effective privacy advice for the programme and across teams in the organisation. The ideal candidate will have in-depth privacy experience, knowledge of current issues, and a legal background. Candidates with a strong legal and/or policy background with relevant privacy experience will also be considered. Looking for someone to start ASAP but will wait for the right person. The initial contract will be for 6 months with extensions likely and there is flexibility to consider working part-time or full-time hours 3-5 days per week.

Role requirements:

• Relevant experience at the principal advisory level or an experienced Senior advisory level
• A good understanding of privacy law (primarily the Privacy Act and the IPPs, but an awareness of wider privacy considerations would also be helpful, as well as an understanding of GDPR
• Awareness of a range of current topics and trends in the privacy sphere, e.g., use of algorithms, biometrics, principles of Māori data sovereignty, etc – or an ability to upskill quickly
• Familiarity with current guidance and advice put out by the Privacy Commissioner/OPC
• Completion of PIAs – or at least supporting an operational team to do so
• Responding to a wide range of privacy questions from operational teams
• Preparation of new privacy policies, updating of existing policies
• A legal background would be preferred but is not essential
• Ability to take ownership and lead on projects managing risk effectively
• Strong written and oral communication skills (for a range of audiences)
• Strong relationship building and stakeholder engagement skills
• Experience (ideally) of working within government

The successful candidate will be required to undergo an organisational clearance which includes a drug test.
