Position Summary:
A vacancy exists in our Mental Health unit for a highly motivated Senior Staff Specialist (Clinical Lead), Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Service with appropriate knowledge and skills to join our friendly and supportive team.

The Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Service provides clinical consultation and liaison support to clinicians who have primary clinical responsibility for patients with a primary medical condition that may be associated with, or complicated by, a mental illness or disorder. The Service provides psychiatric assessment and care for inpatients and some outpatients in general hospital settings. Particular areas of partnership include transplant (heart and lung, kidney, stem cell), diabetes, clinical pharmacology and eating disorders. Other key clinical areas include management of delirium, behaviors related to patients with complex medical/mental health comorbidities and suicidality in general hospital settings.

This position will act as a senior clinician and clinical lead within a multidisciplinary team. This position will also provide clinical leadership in promoting a high standard of patient care as well as driving service improvement, innovation, evaluation and research in the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Service.

Selection Criteria:

  • Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent’s Health Australia.
  • Possess, or be eligible to possess, specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and a Medicare provider number.
  • Possess, or be eligible to possess, Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialist’s State Award and possess, or be eligible to possess, the RANZCP Certificate of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (or equivalent qualification).
  • Possess at least eight years’ experience as a senior medical practitioner.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and high standards of clinical practice in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry commensurate to experience which is appropriate to the requirements of the position. Experience in the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Service’s current areas of transplant, diabetes, delirium and/or dealing with patient with complex medical/mental health conditions and risky behaviors is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high quality compassionate medical care as evidenced by recent practice experience in working congenially and collaboratively as both a leader and member of a multidisciplinary team, and as a provider of services that engender high levels of patient satisfaction and experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching and supervision of specialist trainees, junior medical officers and medical students.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills that support and foster innovation to create a learning culture, with proven ability to improve the quality of services and patient care outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ongoing contribution to the development, dissemination, and translation of new knowledge and practices commensurate with work in an academic teaching hospital environment
