This is an exciting time for our Interislander operation. With a significant investment programme for new sustainable ferries and two new terminals, we are gearing up for a bright future.

KiwiRail and Interislander is embarking on a time of transformational change right across the business. We are rolling out numerous exciting new projects including the construction and delivery of two new ships and ferry terminals through the Inter-Island Resilient Connection (iReX) Programme and revamping our operational/customer service strategies and processes.

Your Role:

Are you looking for your first step into the Maritime Engineering industry?! Our entry level, Engine Room Wiper position could be just for you! We have permanent Entry Level roles now available. A huge plus of this position will be that at the end of your shift you are able to return home as this is a walk on, walk off position so you do not live on the ship; working 14 days on / 7days off, 10 hours per shift.

As a Wiper you will be painting, cleaning, oiling & greasing and providing general support and engine room maintenance in the vessel’s Engine Room’s. You will work closely with the broader Engineering team and directly with both the First and Chief Engineers who will assign your tasks for the shift.

The training course for these roles start on 16 May 2022.

The salary for an Engine Room Wiper is $49,348 per annum until you gain your qualifications.

Your Skills:

You will have excellent interpersonal skills, be highly enthusiastic and enjoy a role that includes following procedures, instructions and problem solving. We have a great team here – you’ll be working as part of a supportive and inclusive team environment.

This is a unique and potentially hazardous environment where safety is paramount so a high level of physical fitness, team spirit and Health and Safety focus are a must in this role. As you’ll be working at sea, you will also ideally not suffer from sea sickness and have the ability to swim.

  • Genuine passion about beginning a career in the Maritime Engineering industry
  • The willingness to “go the extra mile”
  • Strong sense of urgency and work with speed and accuracy
  • Able to pass a Maritime Medical and a drug test
  • STCW Basic Training is an advantage but not essential
