DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY
The Department of Pathology is one of eight departments within the Otago Medical School – Dunedin campus, Division of Health Sciences. The Department is actively involved in undergraduate medical and health science student teaching and supervision of postgraduate research students. The Department houses several internationally recognised research groups.
We are committed to working closely with iwi and Māori organisations and mātauraka Māori has become an integral part of teaching and research across the institution. Our relationship with Ngāi Tahu as mana whenua within their takiwā of Te Waipounamu and, through this, as the University’s principal Treaty partner is especially important.
The role/Te mahi
As the Lead Zebrafish Technician, you will manage and maintain the Otago Zebrafish Facility, ensuring the wellbeing and management of animals is such that researcher objectives are met; compliance with relevant legislation; and codes of practice, guidelines and standards reflect agreed Department policy.
You will be expected to train and supervise other facility technicians, staff and students in all relevant procedures and ensure zebrafish care and husbandry is of a consistently high standard. This role will be responsible for breeding, maintenance and genotyping of zebrafish stocks.
Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
- A tertiary qualification or comparable work experience with fish.
- Scientific/Laboratory/Animal Science background (essential).
- A demonstrated working knowledge of Vertebrate Laboratory Animal Training, principles of Containment, Animal Welfare Ethics and Legislation, Code of Ethical Conduct for Animal Use.
- Excellent organisation and time management skills and ability to prioritise effectively.
- Experience of meticulous record keeping.
- Initiative and ability to contribute to the continuous improvement of the facility and management processes.
- Sound knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and other relevant software applications.
- A commitment to upholding values, tikanga, kawa and traditions as guided by Ngāi Tahu, who are mana whenua in the region.
